More than 11 million tons of copper were produced by the mines of Cornwall and Devon in a ten year period up to the end of the 19th century, and almost a third came from the area of Chacewater. It is true that the real monuments of this era of Cornwall industrial history lie unseen. Mile upon mile of shafts, most now water filled, silent and abandoned. Chacewater, throughout its mining days, was celebrated for its possession of the latest and the largest steam engines; the testing ground for technological innovation. It appears to be tin rather than copper that put this area on the map. Smeaton a celebrated national engineer, erected at Chacewater in 1775 the finest and most powerful engine then constructed - a cylinder 6ft in diameter, with a maximum stroke of 9ft 6 ins. This association with Smeaton is a proud one for Chacewater. To walk through Chacewater and surrounding areas, you are, literally, walking on history. That is why the entire village is now covered by a conservation order,(1999). The 1851 for Kenwyn has in folio 527 the following : Tamblain William, 28 and Jane, 25 no children recorded, as this was early 1851 Martha must have been born just before they left for Australia. William and wife Jane and daughter Martha left Plymouth aboard the Navarino on the 29th June 1851 they arrived at South Australia on the 25th September 1851. That would have been at the height of the Victorian gold rush. In the ten years from 1850 to 1860 Victorias population increased tenfold, from 50 to 500 thousand. ONE OF OLDEST ATLANTIC RESIDENTS IS CALLED Atlantic--Thomas Tamblyn, a pioneer of Houghton county, died at his home at Atlantic on Tuesday morning at the age of 76 years. He was born at Chacewater, Cornwall, England and at the age of 21 came to Quincy mine, where he was employed for several years. In 1869 he was married to Miss Grace Bennetts, of Hancock, in which city he afterwards made his home. Thirty-three years ago he moved to Atlantic where he conducted a meat market for 18 years, retiring from business 15 years ago. He was an active member of the Methodist church and for many years was the leading official of the church at Atlantic, being a trusteee, steward and teacher of the adult bible class. Although for several months he had been failing in health the end came unexpectedly. His pleasant disposition and genial manner won the warm friendship of all with whom he came into contact. A brother, James Tamblyn, died in Hancock 12 years ago, and another brother, Capt. Joseph Tamblyn, died near Redruth, England, a few months ago. He is survived by his widow, three sons, William of Huron county, James of the Seneca mine, and Benjamin of Baltic, and by two daughters, Mrs. William Toy of Atlantic and Miss Maria at home. The funeral arrangements are incomplete pending the arrival of his son William. Please not that the surname of Grace is wrong it should be Dennis. She had spent the winter in Ironwood. Death was caused by pneumonia, complicated by diabetes. Mrs. Tamblyn was an old resident of the Copper Country, having lived there for 65 years. She was born in England. She was married in Hancock to Thomas Tamblyn, who died 13 years ago. Surviving are three sons and two daughters. The remains were taken to Houghton yesterday for burial.

Mrs. Ellis was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and of the Women's Society of Christian Service of the church. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Chappell-Zielinski Funeral Home with Rev. Thomas H. Beaven officiating. Graveside services will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton, Saturday afternoon. The funeral home will be open for visitation beginning at 5 p.m. Friday.
