What does the Pink family name mean?
The surname Pink appears to be characteristic in origin. Our research indicates that it can be associated with the English, meaning, "one with some quality of a chaffinch".

I have been able to trace the family back to John Pinke born in the 1770's.

Avington where John was born.........
The parish of Avington lies to the east of Winchester in the Upper Itchen Valley, and occupies about 3,000 acres, from the banks of the Itchen River to Cheesefoot Head. The parish boundaries were drawn in such a way that its inhabitants could be largely self-supporting: fish and fowl were abundant in and around the river, along whose banks vegetables could be grown and reeds harvested. On the higher ground arable crops could be grown, and there was pastureland for sheep and cattle. In the centre of the parish is Hampage Wood, which provided, game, timber and fuel. The region was inhabited from earliest times, but 'Afintun' enters the historical record in 961 when the Saxon King Edgar granted land here to the Priory of Winchester, and the Bishop
became patron of the living. The Domesday Book records that it consisted of a church, a mill and some land, and that it was reconferred on the Priory of St. Swithun's in 1301. In 1535 the Avington Estate was valued at £22.7s.8p., and was administered by William Basing, cook and keeper of the priory granary. His presence would suggest that Avington Manor had become an estate that the Prior used for sport and recreation, for which it has always been ideally suited.

On the 1841 Census John was living in Bighton Village with a Charles Field.

Chawton where William lived, and bought up his large family, is a historic village due to the fact it is where Jane Austin wrote many of her novels. It is possible that her donkey and trap were a a familiar sight to the Pink(e) family during the years of 1809-1817 when Jane lived in Chawton.
It is a delightful village surrounded by meadows and trees. It has been made historic by a red brick house at the fork of the highways to Winchester and Southampton. (This was Jane Austin's house) A little way from the village stands the great house, built in the 16th and 17th centuries, an impressive sight with noble trees and a church to complete the picture.
On 11th October 1831 Edward Knight Esq. agreed to let one quarter of an acre of a field called Beans Close to William for 7s 6d a year free from Porr Rates.
On the 1841 Chawton - William 40, Sarah 30, Ann 11, William 12, Elizabeth 9, Sarah 8, George 5, Hellen 3, John 1.
On the 1851 census William and Sarah were still in Chawton Street.
On the 1861 census William, ag.lab. wife Sarah, Fanny (presumably Francis) aged 18 and Charles aged 15 were living in the vicinity of Pond Cottage.
On the 1871 census William,ag.lab and wife Sarah with son Edward were living in Chawton.
On the 1881 Census William was widowed and living with his son Edward also a widower, and his daughter Elizabeth King, they were living at this time at Farringdon Road, Chawton.
Cottage Rents 1871-1879 (39M89/B37) William paid 3pound 18 shillings every year in October for the rent of his cottage.

Benjamin, his children Agnes and William appear to have come to Australia under a false name along with Jane who he later married. The passenger list of the Van Diemen which left Liverpool on the 3rd November 1969 had a Benjamin Young wife Jane and two children Agnes 7 and William 4, these ages correspond with the ages of the Pink's. There is no record of any Young's in Victoria from 1870 when the Van Diemen landed in Melbourne.
1873 - Benjamin is listed as living at Latrobe Street (East side) Windsor.
1876 - 1880 he is listed as living at Heidelberg Road, Collingwood. By 1878 Benjamin is listed as the owner of a wooden house in Heidelberg Road. At the time of his marriage to Jane Lewis(Watson), they were both living in Heidelberg Road, Clifton Hill.

In the Cole Hotel Records, Benjamin is the licensee of the Park Hotel, on the corner of Nicholson and Vere Streets, Abbotsford in 1881, and the West of England Hotel 64 Kerr and Fitzroy Streets, Fitzroy from 1883 to 1885. Benjamin helped build the ballroom floor at Government House, Melbourne. His carpentry tools were given to a local Technical School by his great grandson Robert "Brian" Tyers, to be on constant display.
When Benjamin died the informant (his daughter Agnes-Pictured above) stated he and Jane had been married in Liverpool. When Jane died the informant from the hospital (possibly was from Benjamin) also states that they were married in Liverpool

How I became a US senator,
You might be aware that I am in India at the moment, and have been traveling with a US trade mission here. We are traveling with my local congressman Sam Gejdenson as he is also the local representative for where my company, Gerber Technology, is located.
We did all the commercial and diplomatic stuff, receptions at the American Embassy (Roosevelt House) met the American Ambassador to India, met many of the senior Indian politicians from both state and federal political area's, and had lots of briefing with the American commercial service on doing business in India. Many of the meetings were well covered by the India media and were often on the local television and newspapers. Now before you start wondering why is Andrew writing to me bragging about all this, I want to tell you how during this I became a US Senator.
If you have been watching the news recently you might be aware of the tensions between India and Pakistan, a group of four US senators was traveling to India then on to Pakistan via Nepal. The four senators were at the same reception I was invited to at Roosevelt House. (one of them was Christopher Dodd the Connecticut Senator so it was like there were more Federal government CT lawmakers in India than America at the time) Obviously any thing said or done via the US politicians on the India /Pakistan relations, (Including the recent Highjacking of an Indian Air airliner), was being heavily reported. So it was no surprise when on the BBC world service one morning while I was dressing was a segment on the four senators visiting Islamabad in Pakistan. I turn around and there on the television is video of some of our delegation (me and three others) being shown. While they continued to talk about the meetings held between the US Senate delegation and the Pakistanis!
So this is how (at least according to the BBC) I became a Senator!
